Foodborne illnesses of microbial origin continue to be a serious food safety problem worldwide. According to a recent report issued by the U.S. Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), it is estimated that each year approximately 1 out of 6 Americans (or 48 million people) gets sick, 128,000 are hospitalized, and 3,000 die from foodborne illnesses.*
Recent public health crises have highlighted the dangers of failures in the food processing industry and have added public pressure to strengthen sanitation protocols. With market and consumer trends developing a push for safe, effective and natural products, the sanitation industry is beginning to feel the pressure to use green methods of sanitation.
As such, and based on its expertise and knowledge related to biofilms, Innovotech has developed a proprietary light-activated (photodynamic), natural hard surface sanitizer, Sani-Lux™, for use initially as an organic sanitizer in the food processing industry on hard surfaces, such as produce processing facilities. The technology, however, has the potential for multiple applications for use in any situation that requires the sanitization of hard surfaces where a source of light is present, such as those found in dental offices, daycares, restaurants, residences and supermarkets. Sani-Lux™, which is continually active when a light source is present, was recently approved by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) as a natural hard surface sanitizer for use in the food industry. The active ingredient in Sani-Lux™ is a food additive that has already been approved by the CFIA and the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA).
Sani-Lux™ has been shown to be effective against a broad range of microorganisms, many of which have been identified by the CDC as leading causes of death related to foodbourne illness, including the bacteria Listeria, Staphylococcus, Campylobacter, E. coli and Salmonella, as well as fungal pathogens such as Fusarium, Aspergillus, Pythium, and Penicillium species. Sani-Lux™ has been shown to be effective on a wide variety of surfaces and is non-corrosive to metals such as those found in the food processing industry or households.
In keeping with all of Innovotech's products, Sani-Lux™ has been developed to target microorganisms in their biofilm state. Most other hard surface sanitizers and disinfectants have been developed with the free-floating (planktonic) form of the microorganism in mind, which may in part explain the common failures of these products leading to disease transmission and illness. With a natural food additive as its active ingredient, Sani-Lux™ can fulfill a niche in the marketplace for an environmentally friendly, non-toxic, hard surface sanitizer that can be used both by mainstream as well as organic food processors.
